Week 2 and 3

December 4
While June was a work, Larry and I hung around the hotel and beach just relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet.

These are sea grapes growing along the dunes.

 Ring-billed Gull
Least Sandpiper
Melbourne Beach
Osprey out fishing!
After playing on the beach all day, we headed back to June's house to visit and eat leftover gumbo.  It was still delicious

Today's travels have us heading due south to Lantana and West Palm Beach.  Our first stop was the Sebastian Inlet State Park.  This is definitely a fishing park for both humans and fowl!

 Brown Pelican
 Juvenile Brown Pelican

December 6

Celebrating Larry's birthday today touring the area, starting with the Houston Astros/Washington Nationals Spring Training Facility in West Palm Beach.  Obviously there was nothing going on that day, but a nice young man gave us a quick look see into the park.

Next stop was to John D. MacArthur State Park

We next ventured over to the Manatee Lagoon in hopes of spotting some manatees, but no luck.

So we ventured back to the town of West Palm Beach.
The old town with all the "expensive" shops
And the harbor with all the "expensive" boats

 The Breakers Hotel
The large hedges hiding the big mansions
Mar A Lago, President Trump's summer "house"
The beaches of West Palm Beach
Late in the evening we met up with cousins Ben and Hannah Greco at the Key Lime House for Larry's birthday dinner and visit.  We were supposed to have been at their wedding but Hurricane Harvey had other plans.  It was great to hear all about the wedding!

Today we stayed in and enjoyed watching the rain fall, reading, TV, etc.

December 10
Today we ventured out to a couple of different areas starting off with the 6-Mile Cypress Slough Preserve
This "big guy" was resting in the lake

Loved these quotes that were scattered throughout the park

From there we headed over to Manatee Park happened upon the Planters Peanut van and caught a glimpse of a lone Manatee frolicking in the water.

We then drove down to the River District and downtown Fort Myers.

Then back to the condo and the setting sun!

December 11
Today we opted to forgo the beach and head out sightseeing.
This is McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers.
Then over for a glimpse of the Edison & Ford Winter Estates

But the highlight of the trip for us was the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.  A coastal birding paradise!!!

The always beautiful large white pelican

December 12

Today we just hung out at the beach and relaxed.  And yet again, another beautiful sunset!!  Sad to say we leave tomorrow😢😢😢

December 13

One last parting shot of Fort Myers Beach before we make our way back home.
Heading out for home, we made a stop at Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, Florida to see the Manatees (sea cows) or gentle giants as I call them.
And we weren't disappointed.  Enjoy the photos below.

This I believe is a Mountain Bluebird which according to my Sibley Guide to Birds 2006 edition has never been spotted in Florida!

Mushrooms growing out of the tree

December 14
Beau Rivage - Biloxi, Mississippi

December 15
And of course, any trip that takes us down I-10 through Louisiana wouldn't be complete without a stop to Shucks in Abbeville.

Till next time...
